Police and justice

The citizen must be able to rely on the fact that his or her personal data are handled properly and carefully and that these data are not accessible to or used by everyone. This also particularly applies to government bodies such as the police. Because of the relationship of authority between the government and the citizen on the one hand and as a result of the nature of the police data on the other, this is not subject to the Wet bescherming persoonsgegevens (Wbp; Dutch Data Protection Act), but to a special act: the Wet politiegegevens (Wpg; Police Data Act).

Briefly, the Wpg is the privacy act for the implementation of the police function. The Wpg provides for a closed regime for providing information. This means that the collection and receipt of police data or the provision of these data is governed by regulations. The same applies to screening and integrity evaluations. Specific categories of recipients of these data have been specified in the Wpg.
